BackCheck Audits and Discovers Completely Fake or Non-Existent Background Checks!
Would your process survive such an audit?
A recent article in the Washington Post highlighted a story that US government staff had let over 1000 applicants “slip through the cracks.” They were given Top Secret Clearance, but the background checks had never actually been done. The background checks were either rubber stamped, or completely fabricated out of thin air. Appalling.
This is reminiscent of a recent video BackCheck released to expose a company who’s in business simply to supply completely fake references.
Apparently it is OK to lie on a resume because it is not a legal document.
My mother would not agree.
I suggest lying on a resume is just another kind of fraud.
My point is quite simple: Can you trust the process that is in place to effectively screen your candidates? Each day BackCheck catches hundreds of candidates who are simply not suitable for our customers’ employ - candidates who are often pre-screened and interviewed – but have serious criminal pasts or none of their stated or required qualifications.
Of course, BackCheck doesn’t need to read about these stories in the paper. We have our own real life examples of large organisations that one would assume do thorough and consistent pre-employment screening, but sadly for whatever reason, they don’t or fail to do so consistently.
One such customer of ours (who shall remain nameless) thought their pre-BackCheck screening process was reliable. After an audit, they discovered 2000 staff who had somehow slipped past their screening process. As a result, we were asked to re-screen these 2000 employees they identified as having possibly “Slipped through the cracks”. Guess what? Over 25% of the 2000 came back with criminal records. (This employer usually only has about a 3 to 4% criminal record hit rate.) This proved a strong reminder that the bad guys work hard at avoiding participation in a background checking process!
Needless to say, this company now uses BackCheck for every hire, where auditing compliance with their screening policy is easy and ensures no one “Slips through the cracks”.
What is it worth to your company, customers, and employees, to really know who you’re hiring?
Please call BackCheck – we’d be pleased to provide an assessment of your organisation’s screening process to identify areas for possible improvement.
